The Start Line - Search Engines
Charles Kettering said: "Believe & Act as if it were impossible to fail"
The Start Line section covers 'Boosting Traffic to your site' & includes the following 9 topics:
- How to use Search Engines to Boost Traffic
- How to use Blog Track-Backs
- Simple Guidelines to Increase Traffic
- How to Promote your Blog
- Link-Building Guidelines
- Linkbuilding vs Linkbaiting
- Linkbait Blogposting Ideas
- Guest Blogging
- How to Guest Blog
So, what now?
# I need to submit my BLOG URL to some of the search engines such as:Ok, starting with Google, navigate to the Google site, add your URL & comments and then hit the go button!!
I'm done with Google
Now Yahoo - go to the Yahoo site & paste in your URL - I'm all done!!
Next, Technorati - now i already have a Technorati account - so head over to Technorati and get yourself a FREE account!! Once you have set up your account, you will need to 'claim' your BLOG.
Once you have your Technorati account just follow these steps
- Go to BLOGGER CENTRAL in the menu bar - far right-hand-side
- Click onto the PING tab
- You should see a link that says: - Claim a new blog
- Click the link & follow the instructions
- Paste your URL & hit the Begin Claim button
- Now your options are: Claim with OpenID or by writing a post
- I use the writing a post - select this option & proceed to 'complete the claim'
- To 'complete the claim': - they supply a code which you must 'post' on your blog
- So, copy & past the code: Technorati Profile into your blog
- This is how i do it:
- I open up the layout of blogger
- Go to add-a-gadget in the side-bar
- a window pops up
- I scroll down & select HTML/Java [+ button]
- The i paste the code into the box, i add a title
- Then i save & hit the view BLOG button
- You should see a Technorati Profile link in the side-bar
- Head back to the Technorati site & hit the Complete Claim button & you should be done!!
- Now fill in details about your blog - a description, some key words or tags
- Grab some code down the bottom of that page & paste it to your site!
- Not only have you claimed your blog, but you have pinged it as well!!
Now the Open Directory
Go to the Open Directory & follow the instructions
- Read the instructions before you proceed
- Head to the side bar and hit the 'submit a site' button
- This is going to take more time to investigate!!
One hour later.....
This is what i found out about Open Directory:
- Go to the Open Directory Site
- This is the Categories Section - which you will need to come back to, but first. . .
- You need to read the 'Submitting a Site' information:- so, hit the About dmoz tab in the menu
- Hit the 'Submitting a site' link in the side-bar & read the instructions
- Then, go to the Directory and select the category your site/blog will fit into
- Once you have chosen the category, you will notice the Suggest a URL tab in the main menu - well, hit that link and follow the instructions
- Once you have filled in all the information, hit the 'submit' button & you are done!!
That was a huge job - now, the last thing to do is go to MSN's Live Search and see what that does
At first glance this is a lot easier than the Open Directory!!
- Just add your URL & press the submit button - simple as that!!
So, thats the first part - submitting this site to search engines to boost traffic!!
NEXT: i will have a look at item number 2: Backtracks!!!

Leap over the EDGE!!
Come to the edge, he said.
They said, we are afraid.
Come to the edge, he said.
They came,
He pushed them
And they flew.”
One month later on July 29 2008, my father was admitted for surgery – an Aortic Bypass that went drastically wrong and sent our family into a spin. It was during one of my sleepless nights, that I decided to set up a blog to monitor my father’s progress to keep my family from all over the globe up-2-date with his recovery – my second blog – Te Tawiri-o-te-rangi
After returning home from my father’s bedside, I meet with a young lady that had just begun the first leg of her PhD, who asked if she could meet with me regarding some aspects of her research. We met, we talked & I advised her to set up a Blog detailing her PhD journey. It would allow me to pop in every now and then to see how she was going. After that conversation I decided that it was more than appropriate for me to take my own advice: so I set up my third blog – The Pit Of Knowledge – to monitor my own progress with my PhD.
This is the thing, although I have three blogs to my name – they really do not reach a wide audience at all. So, I hunted down some information to help me become really good at blogging – not just writing – but blogging, in the hope that I could derive another stream of income from something that I enjoy doing – writing!! Thus, I have just finished compiling a document of some 70+ pages about blogging - or rather - how to become successful at blogging in 2008.
I am going to try them & monitor my progress with another blog that I am about to set up – a blog about blogging!! I will call this blog: Leap over the Edge. Follow me & see if these techniques really work. Check out my 3 sites and you will see very little traffic. So, beginning today, [Thursday 9 October] I am going to implement the techniques contained in the compilation - i will keep a journal of that journey right here in this blog!!
My commitment:
# Set up a new blog to trial & error the techniques in this document
# Apply all the techniques contained in this document to all four of my blogs
# Keep a log at Leap over the Edge of my progress with each technique as they are applied
# I will endeavour to update this blog once per week or as often as i trial each technique
# Make this a BREAKTHROUGH GOAL for this quarter
# Edit & re-write this document at the end of the quarter
# Compile a new PDF/E-BOOK of how I applied each technique
